the surface & fishermen

The project began with a surrealist game dictated by a die to determine the direction we would take on the streets of Barcelona. By the time the game ended, we were to have arrived at a surface that would inform the rest of the studio project.

I arrived at a wall.

The wall was then translated into a structural model, and drawings of the model resulted in a continuous pattern. We noted the patterns, regular or irregular, which became apparent in these drawings. We would employ these surface patterns, architecturally, into the final stage of the project, which was to house fifty retired fishermen in a man-made park at the edge of the sea.

The fishermen all longed to return to the sea but their lives were no longer there. Their home was now back on the land. The project imagines them scattered across the site, each in their unique individual “lanterns.” Three defined paths would tie their homes together into their context. The project proposes a simple lifestyle. At night, they would light up the park like fireflies wandering in the night.
